About The Golden
The Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland and England in the late 19th Century for the purpose of retrieving wildfowl on land and water. It has since grown to be one of the most popular of all breeds of dog. The mature male Golden Retriever is ideally 23-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 65-75 pounds; the female is slightly smaller.
Golden Retrievers have a very adaptable and trainable nature; one of any age with a good temperament can become a member of the family in a very short time. Although an older dog may be confused at first, patience, consistency and reassurance are the key words to help the dog's self-confidence return and he will readily adapt to your routine and make himself one of the family.
If you rescue an abandoned Golden and give it your affection, it will reward you with eternal love and gratitude. Give the dog a month or so to settle in to its new environment before beginning any formal obedience training.
Attending classes is an excellent way to brush up on any former training he may have, and help you understand his responses and personality more completely. You'll enjoy the time and accomplishments of working together; as well as having a well mannered pet in your home.
There is no question that the Golden Retriever is a remarkable breed; whether in the field, performance rings, service dog or in it's favorite role as family pet!
